Using a quasi-continuum fiber laser as a welding light source, quasi-continuum fiber lasers can operate in both continuous and high peak power pulsed modes. Whereas the peak power and average power of a conventional pure continuous (CW) laser sum to the same in both CW and modulated modes, the peak power of a QCW laser in pulsed mode is up to 10 times higher than the average power. As a result, QCW lasers are capable of producing microsecond and millisecond pulses with higher energy at repetition frequencies from tens to thousands of Hz and can achieve average and peak powers in the thousands of watts. QCW fiber laser welders are ideal for spot and seam welding and long pulse drilling applications. It is far more cost-effective due to its electro-optical conversion efficiency of >30 per cent and maintenance-free operation.
